Summer Holidays: Sunshine, Smiles… and Stress?

While summer brings longer days and a break from routine, it doesn’t always bring ease — for many, this season comes with its own unique set of challenges.

We often associate summer with rest, holidays, and time to recharge. And for some, it really is a welcome pause. But for others, it can feel like anything but relaxing. The shift in pace and routine — even if it’s meant to be a positive one — can stir up feelings of stress, pressure, or emotional discomfort.

For parents, carers, and those managing family responsibilities, the summer months can mean juggling work, childcare, and stretched finances. For others, summer might highlight feelings of loneliness or grief — especially if we’re surrounded by images of other people “making memories” or enjoying time with loved ones.

Even the lack of routine itself can be unsettling. When life suddenly feels unstructured or slowed down, it can bring restlessness or anxiety bubbling to the surface. And if you’re already feeling a bit fragile, that shift in pace can make things feel harder — not easier.

If summer doesn’t feel light or joyful to you, please know you’re not alone. Here are a few gentle reminders if you’re finding this season difficult:

  • You don’t have to be “making the most of it.” You’re allowed to feel how you feel — even if that doesn’t match the sunny mood around you.
  • Having some structure can help. A loose daily or weekly routine might bring more calm and predictability to the day.
  • Say no when you need to. You don’t have to fill every day with plans. Slowing down is valid and necessary, too.
  • Small moments of joy matter. A quiet coffee in the garden, a short walk, or watching a favourite show can all be meaningful ways to care for yourself.
  • Reach out. Whether it’s a friend, a loved one, or a therapist — talking things through can make a big difference.

Summer means different things to different people. And whatever this season looks like for you, it’s okay to meet it with honesty. You don’t need to force positivity — being real is enough.

If you’re finding things especially difficult right now, and feel like you need a safe, supportive space to talk things through, I’m here. Sometimes the most important thing we can do is pause and give ourselves permission to be heard.

Wishing you moments of peace and grounding, however this season unfolds.
